The iPad Mini has been on our radar for a while now, and according to the latest headlines we haven’t got too much longer to wait! AllThingsD have reported that the iPad Mini will be unveiled on October 23rd, just three days before Microsoft release their Surface tablet. The iPad Mini event invitations should be sent out early next week, for a press-only presentation at Apple’s Town Hall Auditorium for the following Wednesday.
The iPad Mini still holds a few surprises, unlike the iPhone 5 which was leaked pretty comprehensively way before it was launched. We know that it will include a 7.85″ display at a 4:3 aspect ratio, but we don’t know what the resolution will be. It might be the same as the first and second generation iPad, 1024 x 768, or it might be the same as the ‘Retina Display’ iPad 3, 2048 x 1536.
If it’s the smaller resolution, we can expect a much lower price point for the tablet, perhaps even as low as $199 in the US. If it’s the higher resolution option, then we might see upwards of $299, as a higher resolution display will require better internal components and batteries to keep up. Interestingly though, the higher resolution display would have the same pixel density as the iPhone 5, meaning that its displays could be made from the same sheets to keep costs down.
The rest of the components are also fairly unknown – we can expect the new Lightning dock connector to be used, we can expect it to be thin and light, and we can expect it to ship with the latest version of iOS, version 6.
I’m quite excited about this announcement. I love that it’s still the case for the iPad Mini that we don’t know everything about it, so Apple could still surprise us with a killer combination of price and features, like a Retina display for $250 or something. Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White recently said that it would outshine the iPad 3 based on what he’s heard from suppliers, and I think Apple definitely have the potential to do just that. We won’t know for sure until Apple announces the device, so pencil in October 23rd in your diaries and hope for the best.
