Small things – Big change

A nice smile to kid, slight helping hand to mother, assisting younger siblings in assignment or project, a small shopping trip with friend, a cup of tea to father, finishing tasks & targets on time, use voting power wisely, keeping our street clean, doing some plantations on a street or park, adjusting of tiny bulb on our main gate to keep the street resplendent, parking cars at right place so they do not obstruct other vehicles and pedestrians, a greeting to peon, thank you to waiter, nice hello to colleagues, and giving seat to senior citizens in bus are those small efforts which could make huge difference in our society. It is possible that people would not ponder them in beginning but slowly and gradually they start to appreciate it. In this regard, I would like to share my own experience that how small things work.

Few days back, I visited a park with my friend. There I met two senior citizens. Initially, they were walking with other people but, after some time, they settled down on an adjacent bench with us. Nicely and politely, they started talking to us; we were amazed because in current situation of our country, everyone seems to be suspicious. After sometimes when we got up to take leave without saying anything to them, one of them politely said, “Beta Khuda Hafiz to kar dain”. Although his words made me deeply embarrassed, I always remember him with respect and dignity because he reminded me of our social values, which we are slowly forgetting.

This experience made me realized that since childhood, small things used to appeal me a lot. I am very fond of small achievements, small treats and tiny happiness. For me, small things are more important than big things. The reason behind this notion is that I believe “big things are sum of small things.” If you see more deeply, you’ll find that an athlete requires life time hard work. He/she reached at particular destiny by pursuing small targets first. The achievement of those small targets acts as milestones in his/her career. Similarly, in order to be a good writer, doctor, or engineer, we all require accomplishing small tasks, like class room test, 500 words assignment, or quiz etc.

Therefore, when we all know this concept and believe it too, then why don’t we apply it in our life?????? Yes! It is a big question indeed! Why we don’t apply it on us as human being? As I mentioned earlier, small things can make big difference. Similarly our small effort may bring tremendous change in our social life. Our nice small gesture and decent attitude may reduce a huge amount of depression and stress of others. The reason is that we all are human and connected with each other through society, therefore, one good deed or act put significant impact on life of those, who are attached to us.

Similarly, we may also adopt this attitude as nation. We only need to be getting aware of our duties, responsibilities and rights. It is very sad that due to current chaos of multiple types, we cannot expect much from this land. But those of us who are matured and dedicated enough must agree with me that it is time to give our best to this society and land. It is possible that initially no one would appreciate us or we won’t receive any recognition in return. But, in long run, our coming generation would be thankful to us. Unlike us, they would remember our generation with respect and dignity.

In the matter of giving, we are not supposed to give something tangibly. Here, ‘giving’ stands for to recognize our duties and rights as mature citizen: as a student, to remain honest with our studies; as a worker, to reject corruption as much as we can; as a housewife, to generate a patriotic and responsible family because family is a unit of society; and as a nation, to remain patriotic with our land and avoid doing such things which may hurt the dignity of our flag. As we all have some kind of position and status in society as father, mother, daughter, son, sister, brother, wife, husband or friend, therefore, being on certain societal position, we need to recognize our duties and responsibilities to our country. In this way, we can hope to bring a change or simply big change.

In the life of nations, it is not necessary that every generation receive everything from motherland. There are some who are created to give. Our generation is the fortunate one, who is supposed to give lot of things to our society and country. We must not despise that we are getting nothing; rather we should be glad that we are having “Giving” hands instead of “Receiving”. It is not necessary that we only give huge things; a tiny effort may bring a lot of positive change. But before that we must learn the habit of appreciating small thing. Until, we do not learn to thank for tiny things, we may not able to gratitude for big stuff.

A good reminder to us, we are so busy in the big stuff that have forgotten to focus on the small ones.
